Dr. Kopec's Message

The Roy W. Brown Middle School is proud to provide a comprehensive program in both academic and extra curricular areas to insure a successful transition from elementary grades to high school. Students in all grade levels (6-8) are grouped in teams and are taught by these teacher teams in their academic subjects. This team structure of students and staff fosters interdisciplinary studies and behavioral growth so important to this age group. Programs in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are designed to reinforce mastery of basic skills, stimulate problem solving and critical thinking skills, and enhance self concept. Each team also contains an advanced class in Mathematics and Language Arts. There is a comprehensive on-going assessment of student mastery using quarterly progress report and report cards, midterms, and final examinations, as well as, district, state, and standardized testing. We also offer after school programs such as Peer Tutoring and a Homework Clinic program to assist students. Our students also publish our own school newspaper, The Roy W. Brown Junction and a yearly literary/art magazine Bear Tracks.
We are integrating technology into our instructional program utilizing our two computer/writing labs, as well as, 15 computers in our library media center. This year, we have renovated an older, larger “shop-style” room and created two “new” technology rich learning environments at minimal cost. Each of these two rooms utilizes individual student computers and SmartBoard technologies. Every academic classroom is equipped with a computer. We have also implemented the "Youth Empowerment Program” in our special education program this school year. Our very active and supportive Parent Association provides enrichment programs and materials for our school community.
The Roy W. Brown Middle School addresses the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards through diverse curricular offerings and a myriad of accommodations to students' academic needs. In addition to the required academic course of study, Study Island, a school and home computer-based academic skills learning and review program is now available to all students. Our diverse curriculum offers study enrichment courses, which include Exploring language Arts and Creative Language Arts electives, instrumental and choral music, technology, basic skills, ESL, foreign language, special education, art, physical education and health education, writing laboratories, group guidance, life skills, and library.
A wide array of extra-curricular activities oriented towards sports, music, special interest and school/community service are sponsored by the Middle School faculty. Our Intervention and Referral Services Committee (I&RS), Roy W. Brown Building Team, and Parents' Association encourages parents to join faculty to work collaboratively in planning and focusing on school and community concerns. School dances, concerts, open house, parent conferences, games night and a summer orientation for incoming students provide an excellent school and community relationship. Increasing self-esteem, along with academic growth, is reinforced through awards assemblies, motivational and special subject assemblies, honor rolls and other programs designed to serve as motivational tools to encourage and reward personal success.
