Dear BHS Student,
Listed below you will find books suggested for each high school grade level. Please select at least one for your summer reading pleasure and for your first writing assignment when you return in the fall. Your English teacher will expect you to have read at least one of the books on the list. Sometime during the first few days of the school year, he/she will give an in-class writing prompt to which you will be asked to respond, based on the book(s) you read.
To receive additional credit, you may submit a reading journal, reflecting on your experience of the book(s) you read during the summer. The journal should include the following elements:
- Plot synopsis, in written or graphic form.
- Brief sketch of each main character and his/her role in the story.
- Discussion of the importance of the setting of the story.
- Reflection on what you as reader learned or felt in response to your reading of the book(s). Some teachers may call this a reflection on the theme of the book.
Your journal should also include at least one of the following elements:
- Song lyrics suggested by this book.
- A letter of recommendation to another reader of your age, explaining why he/she might want to read this book (or not).
- If there is a film version of the book and you took the time to view it, a comparison between the book and the film, emphasizing your personal preference for one form over the other.
When you enter the class in September, you may choose to submit your journal to your English teacher for additional credit, based on depth of thinking, comprehensiveness, and creativity.
Teachers in the Department of English wish you a happy and busy summer, enriched by contact with a few good books!
Sincerely,
Bergenfield High School teachers of English
