Dear Families:
A major goal of our schools is the promotion of reading as a lifetime pleasure. Parents play a significant role in developing their child's interest in reading.
The books on our list are for reading aloud and/or independent reading, depending upon your child's reading skills. We are providing a list of recommended books for you to share with your child over the summer months. Feel free to select other books according to your child's ability and interests. We offer the following suggestions to foster positive reading habits:
- Encourage routine visits to the public library. Join the Summer Reading Club.
- Make reading a family priority. Set aside 20-30 minutes a day for reading.
- Model good reading habits by letting your child see you reading.
- Encourage your child to read aloud to you and to friends and siblings.
- Ask your child to discuss what he/she is reading.
- Read aloud to your child often.
- If your child enjoys certain books, look for other titles by the same author.
- Challenge your child to compare and contrast books
- Provide games that require reading and/or thinking skills.
- Encourage writing in all forms - letter writing, list making, journal writing, etc.
- Limit the amount of time that your child spends watching television and playing computer and video games.
- Most of all, treat reading as an enjoyable family activity.
